Spread the Word … Bridgeway Community Church is hosting its first Mental Health and Faith Conference! The conference for the church community sponsored by the Women’s and Men’s Ministry of Bridgeway Community Church will provide information, resources, encouragement, and hope! The Mental Health and Faith conference will address the societal stigma and the mistaken belief that living with mental illness means there is a faith issue. The church can be a safe place to talk about mental health. The schedule is the following: You will be able to enjoy continental breakfast from 730-8am The Opening session begins at 8am and the concurrent sessions begin at 915am. The Lunch on your own break is from 1130am-1230pm, and 15 minute breaks are scheduled between each section. The last concurrent session begins at 215pm and the Closing session will take place from 330-430pm. A Meditation Room, a Prayer Room, and a Resource Lounge with individuals distributing resources will be available throughout the event. We are excited to offer you over 30 sessions to select from to pre-register for! View the outstanding list of our presenters and sessions at the end of this letter. Corbett, PhD Conference Coordinator 2018 Mental Health and Faith Conference Session & Presenter Information Section 1 9:30-11:30am (Theme and Roundtable Sessions) 9:30-11:30am Section 1 Theme Sessions 1. Mindfulness and Connecting with God with Heather Alexander, M.D. Dr. Alexander received her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her pediatric residency at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. She currently practices in Columbia, MD. She has trained with the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine and is a Qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Instructor. Dr. Alexander has also trained with the Mindful Schools program to teach mindfulness to children. Participants will be able to: Define mindfulness List some of the benefits of practicing mindfulness, including stress reduction and being more aware of God’s presence in your life Experience a mindfulness practice Begin to incorporate mindfulness into daily life 2. Bringing Healing to Our Children & Families: Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) Introduction and Overview with Kwajera Jackson, LCSW-C & Kate Oliver, LCSW-C. Kwajera is a Family Therapist utilizing TBRI with a focus on healing past trauma and facilitating healthy attachments between children and their caregivers at Building Families for Children, where she helped develop the Therapeutic Family Services program. Kwajera also works as a Private Independent Practitioner where she provides individual therapy for adults with trauma histories and substance abuse disorders seeking healing. Kate provides training for professionals working with attachment disorder. She also works as the Training Manager for Building Families for Children, a therapeutic foster care agency, where she creates trainings and works with foster parents in the process of certification. Participants will be able to: Define trauma Describe the importance of understanding attachment Identify key components for bonding with children with attachment issues and/or trauma histories Differentiate between neurotypical brain development and developmental trauma Explain the three attachment goals for children with trauma histories Demonstrate ways to connect with children List three principles of the TBRI model 3. Steps for Growth and Healing with Pastor Dan Taylor. Pastor Dan is the Associate Pastor of Adult Christian Education at Bridgeway Community Church. Participants will be able to: Identify how to heal through bonding with others Set boundaries with others Differentiate between good and bad emotional behaviors Develop skills to facilitate growth 4. Psalms Expressions (Art & Drama Therapy) with Erin Brindle, LPC, ATR-BC and Christina Pinnell Rawls . Erin provides a counseling service to the Greater Washington DC community in New Creations Counseling and Art Therapy. Recently Healing Groups for women experiencing grief from past relationships and trauma. Christina Pinnell Rawls is a teaching artist who uses drama and storytelling techniques as a mean of healing. Participants will: Learn how to meditate on a Psalm Become familiarized with art and drama therapy forms of expression Share responses in art, drama, and verbal responses with their group 9:30-10:30am Section 1 Roundtables 1. The Role of a Pharmacist in Mental Health with Dr. Jovonne Williams. Dr.. Jovonne Williams is a Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist with experience providing medication therapy management and pharmacotherapy counseling to patients with a focus on managing chronic health conditions. Participants will learn: How can a pharmacist help you care for your health Safe and proper use of medications Questions to ask your doctor/pharmacist Medication Adherence & Disposal of Medications Recommendations Resources to help with cost of medications 2. A Man’s battle with anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts with Bill Green. Bill Green is the Director of the Men’s Ministry at Bridgeway Community Church. For Men Only 3. Mother & daughter journey with Bipolar Disorder: Living through the Grief & Walking in Faith with Mireille Grangenois, Ariane Cottman, Tamia Barnes Tomasek, MA, LCPC. Mirelle is a Bridgeway Partner and Ariane grew up in Bridgekids. 4. Improve Sleep and Lessen Stress with Meditation with Barbara Vidal, MAc RDH, CBBT. Barbara is a Maryland’s Support Group Leader for the National Arthritis Association, member of NADA National Association of Detox Acupuncturists where I treat Addictions and PTSD, certified Meditation Teacher with a Master Certification in Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), and part-time practice in holistic detox therapies treating Lymes and other chronic illness. 5. “Stress – An Overview”: Learn access to inner composure through Psalm 131 with Kathleen Young, LGMFT. Kathleen Young. Kathleen Young, M.A., LGMFT, is a Marriage & Family Therapist, who has been practicing for over 6 years in both California and Maryland. Ms. Young also worked in the legal industry for many years. 6. Faith-based Caregiving with Min. Mike Perez. Min. Perez is a member of the Maryland Board of Directors for the National Alliance on Mental Illness and is a leadership development instructor who has completed graduate level work in Theology. He was a caregiver of someone with serious mental illness. 10:30-11:30am Section 1 Discussion National Alliance On Mental Illness (NAMI) In Our Own Voice NAMI In Our Own Voice 60-minute presentation will provide a personal perspective of mental illness, as presenters with lived experience talk openly about what it’s like to live with a mental health condition. Section 2 12:45-2pm (Theme and Roundtable Sessions) 12:45-2pm Section 2 Theme Sessions 1. Healthy Relationships in Marriage Session I with Nicole and Tony Davis. Nicole and Tony Davis. Tony and Nicole have been married over 26 years and are the co-founders of Empower to Engage, an organization designed to equip men and women with resources and strategies to create stronger marriages and families. As marriage and family relationship coaches, they have authored books on marriage, parenting, and personal leadership. Speakers will provide practical tips on how to put the fun, fire, and focus back in your marriage relationship. Participants will learn how to: Establish meaningful relationships Keep the success of the marriage the main priority Communicate effectively 2. An Integrative Approach to Depression with Vanessa Allen, MD. Dr. Vanessa Allen received her medical degree from Howard University, College of Medicine, and completed her residency in Family Medicine at Duke University Hospital in North Carolina. Dr. Allen has also embraced integrative medicine to complement her private practice in Glenn Dale, MD. Participants will be able to: Explain the signs and symptoms of depression. Demonstrate examples of relaxation therapy with meditation and aromatherapy. Identify complimentary therapies such as vitamins, herbs, and nutrition to improve the sign and symptoms of depression. 3. The Awesome Power of Self-Talk: Is it my friend or enemy with Dr. Carl S. Barham, EdD. Dr. Barham is the Executive Director of Counseling and Personal Empowerment Services (CPES), located in Columbia, Maryland. In this organization, the counseling approach used for addressing mental health challenges is from a holistic perspective. Participants will learn: Ways of naming self-talk How to differentiate between positive and negative self-talk The sources of negative and positive self-talk The four major types of negative self-talk At least 5 applications for managing self-talk more efficiently 4. How to walk in victory over mental illness with Bergina Isbell, MD, Min. Mike Perez, Shawan Pettie, and Asa Briggs. Dr. Bergina is a psychiatrist and the author of Victory over depression with and without medicines. Min. Mike is a knowledgeable presenter with the National Alliance on Mental Illness speaking from the perspective of a family member of a consumer. Shawan Pettie Author and Etiquette Coach Shawan Pettie speaks from the perspective of a consumer and brings a unique perspective of faith to the discussion of depression. Asa Briggs, NP Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Asa Briggs shares the experience of a seasoned mental health provider who cares for those dealing with stress, depression, and mental health conditions. Participants will hear from a clinician, caregiver, and care-recipient on: Medicinal and Non-medicinal treatments Faith- based caregiving Living victoriously with mental illness 12:45-1:30pm Section 2 Roundtables 1. The Path to and from Gambling with Dr. Mary E. Robinson. Mary E. Robinson, Ed. D has a Doctorate Degree Higher Education from Morgan State University, a M. S. Degree in Counseling from Loyola College in Maryland and is a member of National Council on Problem Gambling. Participants will be able to: Identify embedded factors that lead to gambling. Distinguish between social activities and psychosocial factors of gambling. Increase awareness of referral resources to develop an intervention for gambling addictions. 2. Showing Up 4 the Fight: From Hospitalization to Wholeness using God’s Word and Therapy with Author and Speaker Lady Shelly Spence. Participants will learn how to: Show up in your own situation, by having a voice to no longer live in silence of the stigmas attached to mental illness Thrive while moving beyond the stigma of Mental Illness in the Church 3. Emotions and Chronic Illness with Barbara Vidal 4. Medication and Faith with Dr. Kimberly Walker. Dr. Walker is an Adult, Child and Adolescent Board certified Psychiatrist with broad clinical experience providing consultation in inpatient, group homes, school-based Partial programs, outpatient and educational entities. She is the Medical Director of Regenerations Counseling Services of Baltimore. Section 3 2:15-3:15pm (Theme and Roundtable Sessions) 2:15-3:15pm Section 3 Theme Sessions 1. Faith and Mindfulness: A way to manage anxiety and stress with Tasheka Cox Ed.D., LICSW. Dr. Cox is a mindfulness based psychotherapist who specializes in treating anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and life transition difficulties. Also, she works with individuals, families, and groups in her private practice and as a school social worker in Washington, DC. Participants will learn how to: Explain the stress response Explain the neuroscience of mindfulness Demonstrate the benefits of mindfulness and faith in reducing stress and anxiety 2. Healthy Relationships in Parenting Session II with Nicole and Tony Davis. Tony and Nicole have been married over 26 years and are the co-founders of Empower to Engage, an organization designed to equip men and women with resources and strategies to create stronger marriages and families. As marriage and family relationship coaches, they have authored books on marriage, parenting, and personal leadership. As the proud parents of two adult sons, they will provide practical tips to help parents win the battle for their children. From Overwhelmed to Overjoyed!: Connecting with your life purpose to create a life that you love with Dr. Kesha Moore. Kesha Moore, PhD is an educator, author, speaker, and executive coach, CEO of Life In Focus Coaching, and the author of the book “Your Life as a Celebration: Accomplishing your goals with less stress and more joy.” Participants will be able to: Explain spiritual, emotional, and physical benefits associated with identifying and living out one’s life purpose Describe the process of discovering one’s life purpose Develop a strategy as a foundation for one’s career and/or business development 4. Religiously-Integrated Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression with Dr. Michelle Pearce. Dr. Pearce is an Assistant Professor and clinical psychologist at the School of Medicine at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. This session will provide an overview of what religiously integrated CBT is and how it works. Participants will be able to: Define Religiously Integrated Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Describe an evidenced-based rationale for using Christian CBT with Christian clients with depression. Compare the Christian CBT model to the conventional CBT model. Review seven tools for Christian CBT 2:15-3:15pm Section 3 Roundtables 1. Screen Addiction: Social media and video games with Danice Young 2. A Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner’s Role in Medication and Faith with Mercy Fadoju, CRNP. Ms. Fadoju, CRNP is a Nurse Practitioner specialist in Catonsville, Maryland. She graduated in 2007 and coordinates care with other clinicians and doctors including her Faith Health Care Center in Catonsville, MD. 3. A Caregiver’s journey of Bipolar Disorder with Pastor Angel Cartegena. Pastor Angel is the Associate Pastor, Care & Adult Christian Education of Bridgeway Community Church. 4.
