In the midst of a pandemic, it may seem difficult to allow yourself enjoyment while so many are suffering. The truth is, people are always suffering. Suffering is a part of life, just like poverty and death. While it may sometimes feel like it is, suffering is not a new phenomenon. So, in times like this when we are barraged with images of suffering, we have to give ourselves permission to experience happiness where and when we can. By doing so, you put yourself in a better position to be part of the solution for those who find themselves suffering.
Live
Get outside in the sun, breathe fresh air, go for walks, enjoy the fascination of watching animals play or the sheer beauty of a blue sky. Fly a kite. Talk to friends and families about happy things. Make new memories. Dream about your future; or start a new hobby. Be an encourager to others. Be amongst the living and let your life count!
Love
Give yourself in service to others. Offer kind words of encouragement to complete strangers. Appreciate what you have and tell people how much they have made your life better. Give away some of your belongings to make life easier for someone else. Pay it forward by buying someone’s groceries or gas. Cleanup someone’s yard for free.
Laugh
Laughter is healing. It will make you and others relax. It will put you in a better mood. It will make your days lighter. Find ways to laugh. Watch a movie, read a funny book, or look at pictures of yourself (that’s supposed to be funny)!
Everyday we are faced with information that is affecting our lives in ways that are beyond our control. To minimize the negative impact, and to give yourself balance, boundaries, and relief, be intentional about the way you live, love, and laugh. There is no better time to start than right now.
