Happy New Year!

It’s hard to believe we have entered a new decade. With eager expectations many people have already started this new year making their lists of things to do, writing their visions, and planning the goals they want to accomplish. I’m hearing the buzz of new year resolutions, exercise advice, and healthy eating tips.

However, what I haven’t heard are tips for resting, taking it easy, and good ole’ relaxation.

When God created the earth, He created the animals, man and woman, and vegetation all in six days. Then something extraordinary happened on the seventh day – He rested!

Go figure. God rested.

In the Bible, the day of rest is called a Sabbath day. Further reading reveals that the Sabbath was actually created for us human beings, not for God.

Go figure again! God knew rest was important.

In talking to folks, I’m hearing that for many of them, it’s hard to appreciate rest. It’s what I refer to as, The Ministry of Rest.

I love opportunities to rest. I see rest as a treat and naps as a treasure. I think one of the primary reasons rest is not a high priority for people is because the benefits of it are hard to measure.

Think about it. Rest doesn’t show up in your bank account, it can’t be tracked on a scale, and it doesn’t feel very rewarding to check it off of a daily to-do list.

Nonetheless, I assure you, the rewards are so worth it. Studies show that resting is a de-stresser, brings mental clarity, and improves mood among other things.  So, while the year is still early, get in your fair share of do-nothingness. It’s so worth it!

You can thank me later. Cheers!
