There is a saying that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. This saying has truly stood the test of time as people have enjoyed buying second-hand items. Just think about the online consumer-to-consumer buy and sell sites, thrift stores, yard sales, and even auctions that cater to this type of purchasing. Theses venues are filled with items that were once liked and even loved by their previous owners. However, in time, these beloved items began to represent something different.

There are many reasons we choose to discard something we once cherished. It could be a need to relocate, so many of the items simply couldn’t go. Perhaps someone was downsizing where they lived, so they had to get rid of nice items (that they would have kept otherwise). Another reason might be the death of a loved one and so people decide to give items away instead of discarding them. Or maybe a person experienced a breakup and no longer wanted the memories of what was…

For whatever the reason, once you chose to get rid of your personal items someone else found them and a new feeling of excitement was born.

Now, let’s talk about what you still have in your hands…

These days it’s more challenging to keep a positive outlook on life. In fact, it takes extra effort every day to stay strong, keep persevering, and to stay connected not only to things, but also to other people.

Not only can we stay connected, we need to for our own well-being.

The more connected we are to others, the better we will feel. In fact, staying connected yields a happier outlook on life and better health (mhanational.org). In times like this, we can choose to focus on what we do have and not what we don’t have.

This powerful mental exercise has the ability to change our mood altogether. It’s synonymous with seeing the glass half full instead of half empty. Perspective is everything.

So today, as you are looking at your life: your family, finances, goals, and the material things you possess, what do you have in your hands? Whatever or whoever you find still in your life or network count your blessings with a grateful heart.
